Review of the Platinum OLEeNU Shield

About

This is the 0.5mm version of this pencil, and can be found on JetPens for $3.30 USD.

Quality

The pencil is completely made of plastic except for the retractable tip, the spring, and some other bits. The clutch is plastic, so I suspect it may have some problems holding lead in the future. I get about 8mm of lead out with 10 clicks. Out of the box it's not having any problems holding the lead, however. The plastic on the body is very solid.

Writing Experience

This pencil is very comfortable to me. It feels very light and has a comfortable, soft rubber grip. The eraser doesn't wiggle too much when in use.

Features

The clip surprised me! This pencil has the strongest plastic clip I've ever seen or felt on a mechanical pencil, and the tip is retractable, so I have zero qualms about carrying it around in my pocket.

The pencil has a small suspension that is supposed to help prevent lead breakage, but it's very little and works solely for forces parallel to the lead, so I doubt it helps very much on that front. The pencil also has an extra clutch mechanism in the tip is supposed to let you use more of every piece of lead than other pencils. It does do that, but the retracting tip is a bit finicky. In fact, it's not a sliding sleeve at all. If you click once to extend just the tip, you are going to get scratchy writing from the get-go, but the little suspension it has kind of let's you get away with it anyway. Pushing on the page a bit will push the sleeve back a little, and then the suspension will push that bit of lead back out. The result is that you can use the lead almost all the way back into the pencil by keeping the retractable tip just a little bit behind the end of the lead. My very unscientific and inaccurate testing tells me that you should be able to use up to the last 4-5mm or less. This means you will save about 5-6mm or more of lead with this pencil. Honestly, lead isn't that expensive, and even if you are on your last piece, this system isn't life saving because you need another piece of lead in the chamber to be able to use the current piece to the last few millimeters.

Conclusion

I give this pencil a B rating. This is a comfortable pencil. It is a cheap pencil, but this one will probably last you a while. It is solid and has a very good plastic clip, and I think the secondary clutch and suspension will let the plastic clutch live for longer than it should.
